Detective Luca has just helped his girlfriend Veronica move in with him — their relationship fresh and full of promise. Then comes a seemingly routine phone call. The murder of a young female university student appears to be an open-and-shut case. But as Luca digs deeper, the victim's hidden life begins to ignite something dark and obsessive within him. As he uncovers the lurid secrets surrounding the homicide, Luca becomes increasingly consumed by his own strange, hidden desires. Critic Reviews
🗞️ Italian Cinema Review
"Roberta Torre crafts a suffocating psychological thriller that is as much about self-destruction as it is about crime. Lo Cascio is mesmerizing in his slow unraveling."
🗞️ Netflix Film Digest
"The Dark Sea is a slow burn of repressed desire and moral collapse. It rewards patient viewers with a deeply unsettling portrait of a man undone by his own obsessions."
🗞️ European Cinema Weekly
"Torre demonstrates masterful control of tone and atmosphere. The film drips with tension and moral ambiguity — this is not a comfortable watch, nor is it meant to be."
User Reviews
⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Haunting and deeply unsettling" by FilmFanatic_Nairobi — 2018
This film gets under your skin quietly and refuses to let go. Lo Cascio delivers one of the most quietly devastating performances I have seen in a thriller. Brilliant.
⭐⭐⭐ "Slow but rewarding" by CriticalEye_KE — 2018
Not for everyone. The pacing demands patience but the psychological depth makes it worth the effort. The final act is genuinely disturbing.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Italian cinema at its most daring" by MidnightMovieBuff — 2019
A criminally underseen thriller. Torre takes a simple murder investigation and transforms it into a profound study of obsession, identity and moral collapse. Essential viewing.
⭐⭐ "Too slow for its own good" by CasualViewer404 — 2018
The atmosphere is impressive but the pacing tests your patience. Interesting concept that never fully delivers on its promise.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Psychologically rich and visually stunning" by EuropeanCinemaFan — 2019
Roberta Torre shoots this film like a fever dream — warm, disorienting and deeply intimate. A mature, sophisticated thriller that trusts its audience completely.

Critic Consensus
Karanlık Deniz — The Dark Sea — is a slow, seductive and deeply uncomfortable psychological thriller that lingers long after the credits roll. Roberta Torre directs with cold precision, and Luigi Lo Cascio delivers a performance of quiet, creeping devastation. Not a film for those seeking easy answers or comfortable resolutions — but for those willing to wade into its murky waters, it offers a richly rewarding experience.
